Autumn is here and with it comes beautifully coloured leaves and a season of wrapping ourselves up in soft hats and scarves while we enjoy the changes in nature. Bring on red and orange-toned adventures outdoors followed by deliciously cosy nights in, in front of the fire.
With this change in weather comes the ideal opportunity to propose. Perhaps your partner loves autumn, or maybe you find it to be the most romantic time of year. Cuddling up to keep warm as the temperature drops is undoubtedly a perk of the season.
So, if you’d like to propose to your loved one in autumn, read on for some gorgeous ideas.
The hike proposal
Take your other half on a lovely fall walk through some woodland to crunch through the fallen leaves as the sunlight dapples your surroundings. Then, when you come to a particular spot — perhaps a clearing, the top of a hill offering a breath-taking view, or a serene lake — drop down on one knee, produce the engagement ring from your rucksack, and pop the question.
Worried there is nowhere proposal-worthy in your area? There absolutely is. The joy of autumn is that it gives everywhere a luscious glow and a covering of vibrant leaves.
Want to include family and friends in your proposal? Plan your route ahead of time and have every one your partner loves waiting just out of view near your chosen proposal location. They’ll be delighted to be included, and your fiancé/e will be so surprised to see them!
Want to step it up a notch? Organise for a photographer to capture the moment from a distance, then have some official shots taken once they’ve said ‘yes!’.
The Halloween proposal
Halloween offers the perfect opportunity to have some fun with your proposal or to make it a little bit creepy or kooky.
Perhaps your partner loves Halloween, scary movies, or playing zombie games on the Xbox. Maybe you first met at a Halloween party. Whatever the reason for choosing Halloween to declare your love, we can guarantee it will result in a unique proposal they’ll never forget.
Pumpkins are synonymous with Halloween, so why not carve them to spell out your proposal? If you’re planning on attending a party, you could propose there. Or, have someone light up your jack o’ lanterns in the garden for when you return home.
Alternatively, use the Halloween fancy dress code to your advantage. Pretend you can’t make it to a party, then dress up and sneak in. Locate your partner, approach them, and give them the surprise of their life with a beautiful engagement ring!
As sweets are so ingrained in the tradition of Halloween, you could also use these to your advantage for a Halloween marriage proposal. Pop the question using one of those giant candy rings — then, when they say yes, pull out the real engagement ring!
Many companies now offer personalised sweets, such as Love Hearts, so you could consider that option, too.
The beach proposal
While some might argue that the beach is more of a summer destination, it can be an extraordinary place to pop the question in autumn. Thanks to the season, you’re more likely to have the beach to yourselves, and what’s more romantic than walking hand-in-hand along the beach with nobody else in view?
This proposal idea is perfect for those who want a more intimate, less public moment.
You could leave a message in the sand for your partner to see when they arrive at the beach. Check the tide times beforehand though, so your message doesn’t get washed away.
Make sure to take lots of warm clothes along for both of you in case the temperature drops, as you’ll probably want to spend some time on the beach before heading elsewhere.
Consider packing a thick blanket to sit on and some hot drinks to keep your hands toasty. You could even light a fire if they’re allowed on the beach you choose and sit beside it as you plan out your future together.
The maize maze proposal
Maize mazes pop up all over the country in late summer and early autumn, and they are great fun to navigate with your partner, kids, friends or family.
Why not take your partner, but have all of your friends and family waiting to surprise them in the maze as you drop to your knee? They could wait in the middle of the maze, or at the exit (depending on the maze layout).
Interestingly, a maize farmer in the USA proposed through a maize maze he created, by spelling out “Allie will you marry me?” and showing her an aerial photograph of it!
