If you think a proposal is just a case of getting down on one knee and saying four words, think again! This is a moment that your partner will have been daydreaming about for many years — maybe even since childhood — and so, even if you’re not the romantic type, you need to put some thought and effort in, so you don’t let them down. Bear in mind, too, that this event will be talked about for many years to come.
Read through our list of eight proposal faux pas below, and avoid a potential disaster like the ones in this article by The Knot.
It’s too soon
Make sure your relationship has got past the ‘honeymoon’ phase before you consider proposing to your girlfriend or boyfriend — an early proposal could scare them off, create a very awkward situation, or result in an unsure “yes” that might change to a “no” further down the line. Wait a bit longer and make sure you’re making the right decision.
There’s no ring
While some proposals are still made without a ring for various reasons, many surveys have shown that ladies do prefer to be proposed to with a ring that you have chosen for them. Find out their ring size and choose an engagement ring you think they might like. Usually this can be returned to the jeweller and exchanged if your partner isn’t a fan of the ring you selected. If you don’t know the ring size, you can order a “Not sure” size from us (where we send out whatever size we have in stock), and you then get one free ring resizing after the proposal, for the perfect fit.
You asked for too much advice
When it comes to planning your proposal, the chances are you are going to want some advice from those who have been there and done that. However, be wary of asking too many people for advice — you’ll end up overwhelmed by all the ideas, which can leave you confused about what to do. In this scenario you might also lose track of what your partner might want from the event.
It’s not special
Leaning over to your other half while you’re watching Breaking Bad on the sofa in your pyjamas and saying, “Maybe we should get married” just doesn’t cut it. If you’re not romantic, that’s fine, but show your girlfriend or boyfriend you have thought about them with the proposal and take them somewhere that is special to both of you — perhaps the place you first met, where you had your first date, or where you first said “I love you”.
It’s too special
The internet is full of epic proposals involving flashmobs, helicopters, celebrities, and so on. While they are fun for other people, most people would be happier with a more low-key proposal. You don’t need to spend £3000 on top of the cost of the engagement ring and hire a cast of actors to show you care!
It’s too public
We’ve all seen those proposals at big events where the big question is asked in front of an arena full of strangers. If your partner is into very public displays of affection, then fair enough. However, for many people, such a public proposal would be their worst nightmare, so give it careful consideration before taking this route.
It’s not a secret
Aside from informing parents as you wish, it is best practice to keep your proposal a secret until it has happened. Many a secret proposal has been spoiled by over-excited friends who can’t keep it to themselves!
It’s badly timed
Use your common sense with this, and don’t go ahead with your planned proposal if something else is going on in your lives at the time. Reasons for delaying your proposal could include: sickness, a family emergency, a lost pet, or a big work deadline. If something comes up, wait until life has settled back down again before you pop the question.
