Getting engaged is generally regarded as one of the happiest events in people’s lives. However, it can also bring with it some unexpected occurrences, which you won’t know about until that ring is on your finger. In a bid to share our knowledge and prepare you for the road ahead, we have compiled a list of ten of these unexpected occurrences below. If you’re engaged already, do you recognise some of these?
Everyone wants to look at the ring
As soon as you tell people you’ve got engaged, the first thing they want to do is see the ring. After all, the engagement ring was probably a big part of the proposal itself. However, it isn’t just other people who will want to see the ring — you’ll find yourself staring at it throughout the day for the next year or so, too!

You’ll be looking at your left hand a lot!
You’ll have to tell your proposal story a lot
Everyone loves a bit of romance, so get ready to tell your proposal story over and over again, until even you are sick of hearing it! Although, after the 20th time of telling the tale, you’ll have got it down to the key facts and it will easily roll off the tongue.
People ask you hundreds of wedding questions
While you and your fiancé/e haven’t yet had time to sit down together and discuss wedding ideas, you’ll have friends and family wanting to know not only where the wedding is being held but on what date, at what time, where they should stay the night, where they can park, and more!
Your friends and family become expert wedding planners

Everyone becomes a wedding planning expert!
People can’t help but want to get involved in your wedding planning, and suddenly all of your friends and loved ones are experts at planning your ideal wedding. Except it isn’t your ideal wedding at all, and you’re probably going to have to politely tell them all to back off and give you and your partner some space to plan the day yourselves. It might be nice to allocate each eager helper a small task, so they don’t feel cut out of your planning.
Your loved ones want an engagement party
As if planning a wedding and honeymoon isn’t enough, your loved ones make it clear to you that they’d really like you to throw an engagement party, too! If you’d like one aswell, I’d recommend passing the event planning for this party to parents or a trusted friend, so you can concentrate on the main event.
You discover how much weddings cost
We all know that weddings are costly, but that’s as far as most peoples’ knowledge goes. Until you get engaged, that is. Then you find out exactly how much every little aspect of your big day will cost. And it hurts a little! Still, now you are engaged there is no rush to get married, so it’s time to get saving for a wedding within your ideal budget.
You start watching all the wedding-themed TV shows

You may become hooked on all wedding-themed TV
Even if you’ve never had any interest in them before, you will now find yourself hooked on Don’t Tell the Bride, Married at First Sight and generally any TV programme with even a vague wedding theme.
The surname conversation happens
Will you keep your own surname, take his, or merge the two? This can be fun to discuss, bit can also be rather serious. After all, you’ve had your name for your whole life. Talk it through together and see what your opinions are.
