Whether you love being indoors or out, there is something truly magical about winter — the soft clothes, crackling fires and potential for snow being just a few factors.
Moreso than summer, winter provides ample opportunity for intimate moments between couples; whether you’re cuddled up at home together in soft candlelight, wrapped up in layers and taking a walk together in the local park, or giving each other gifts on Christmas Day.
You may have chosen winter to propose for a specific reason — perhaps a birthday or anniversary date. If so, you may have a specific plan in place already.
If not, you’ll find a selection of gorgeous winter proposal ideas below.
On a glamping holiday
You may be surprised by the suggestion of glamping in winter but in fact, renting a well-heated yurt or cabin at this time of year can be a wonderful experience.
A weekend away means you are free from most distractions and can concentrate solely on each other, which can be rare in this day and age. Switch your phones off for total relaxation while you are away.
Depending on your preferences, you can enjoy hot chocolate together huddled up next to a fire or sit side-by-side and admire the stars from a hot tub with a glass of bubbly in hand.
In such a romantic setting, you can pop the question at any point, and it will feel just right.
On the slopes
Whether you are seasoned skiers or snowboarders, or it’s your first time on the slopes, a skiing trip presents a great opportunity for you to propose to your partner.
Take your pick of perfect times to pop the question — whether halfway down a slope, on the ski lift, or while enjoying the après ski. If you’d prefer a public display of affection or a more private situation, a ski trip can easily offer either. Consider what your love would prefer and take it from there.
Whenever you choose to propose during your ski trip, the gorgeous snowy setting you have chosen for such a special moment will melt your partner’s heart.
On Christmas Day
Christmas Day is already loved by most so, if you don’t mind sharing the limelight, why not make it you and your partner’s special day too? You’ll certainly never forget when you popped the question!
It’s also a wonderful time to propose as you’ll already be surrounded by delighted friends and family who you can celebrate with. The chances are there will be a bottle of fizz in the fridge, too!
We wrote a whole blog post on Christmas proposal ideas, so if this is something you are considering, make sure to read that before making any plans.
In the snow
If you’re lucky enough to get some snowfall on the day of your proposal, make the most of it and get outside to secure that dream engagement. However, if you only want to propose when it’s snowing, you may want to head abroad to a country where it is more likely.
During a snowball fight
If you’re a playful couple, a snowball fight could be the ideal setting for you to drop down on one knee (although, you may have to endure a snowball to the face while doing so!) Hopefully the snowballs will stop flying once your partner realises what’s happening…
During a photoshoot
If you are a keen photographer, you’ll be aware that snow provides a beautiful landscape for a photoshoot like no other. Encourage your partner to head outside, and get capturing their beauty amongst the stunning scenery. When you feel the time is right, tell your other half you’re setting your camera up for a couple’s shot but set it to video instead.
Surprise your girlfriend or boyfriend with a sparkling engagement ring and you’ll have a record of that “yes!” for many years to come.
Climbing a mountain
Another snowy option is to head for the mountains. If skiing isn’t your thing, you could do a big climb together, up a large hill or mountain — ending in a fabulous surprise for your partner. Make sure you are well prepared for any eventuality if you’re not seasoned climbers, though.
Bringing your own snow
If you’re determined to propose in the snow but the weather isn’t on your side, don’t worry, you don’t have to push your proposal back — you can recreate the perfect snowy scene instead.
Select a small outside area at home and fill it with billowing white materials — creating a white ceiling, walls and floor. Add in some white fairy lights and some seating. If you want to go all out, you could also rent a snow machine for realistic falling flakes.
Tell your love to wrap up warm, pour them a delicious mulled wine, enjoy a lovely evening together and then drop to your knee in your self-made winter wonderland.
While ice skating
I doubt there’s an activity cuter and more wintery than ice skating as a couple, and it’s a great opportunity for you and your partner to support each other when one of you takes a fall.
Why not fake a fall and watch as your love heads over to help you up, only to realise it wasn’t a fall at all but a surprise proposal!
