The history of OMEGA

23-year-old Louis Brandt opened a factory in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, to manufacture pocket watches in 1848.

In 1877, Brandt’s son, Louis Paul, joined the company and it was then renamed, Louis Brandt & Fils. Sadly, Brandt himself died just two years later.

Following the death of their father, Louis Paul’s brother, Cesar, joined him in business and together they moved the factory to Biel — at which point the company rebranded to Louis Brandt & Frère.

In 1894, the company created the famous calibre known as the OMEGA movement and in 1903, it rebranded for the final time to OMEGA.

OMEGA is the only watchmaker to be named after a movement.

OMEGA in space

The OMEGA Speedmaster was the first watch worn on the moon, in July 1969, after which it became one of the world’s most famous chronographs.

Since 1965, the Speedmaster has been used by astronauts and since the first moon landing, it has been on six further lunar landings.

The OMEGA Speedmaster is often referred to as “the Moonwatch”.

OMEGA in sport

Known for precision, it’s no surprise that OMEGA is heavily involved in the sporting world.

OMEGA has a partnership with the PGA of America for golf and an association with FINA for competitive swimming and diving.

OMEGA also delivers timekeeping expertise to the world’s leading competitions in athletics, bobsleigh and monobob, and sailing.

OMEGA watches have featured on the big screen many times over the years.

James Bond

Since 1995, 007 has worn an OMEGA Seamaster watch in every James Bond movie — that is eight films, soon to be nine.

The current Bond, Daniel Craig, has worn the following OMEGA watches:

• ‘No Time to Die’ (released in 2021): OMEGA Seamaster Diver 300m 007 Edition.
• ‘Spectre’: OMEGA Seamaster 300m SPECTRE Limited Edition and OMEGA Aqua Terra 150m.

• ‘Quantum of Solace’: OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m.

OMEGA has also created special limited edition timepieces over the years, which have been dedicated to the legacy of the Bond movies.

Released in anticipation of ‘Spectre’, this watch was inspired by the Bond family coat of arms, which forms a dynamic pattern on the watch’s blue dial.

As a further nod to 007, the movement’s oscillating weight has been cut and shaped to resemble a gun barrel.

Scarface

In ‘Scarface’, Al Pacino’s character, Tony Montana, wore an OMEGA La Magique timepiece in several scenes.

OMEGA in music

Ringo Starr was a big fan of OMEGA watches and was often seen wearing his OMEGA Time Computer LED wristwatch, which was the brand’s first LED timepiece.
