A sparkly engagement ring is something you will undoubtedly want to show off to friends, family and even strangers in the street. The thought of ever removing it may seem like utter madness. However, your engagement ring is also a precious piece of jewellery to be treasured. You will want it to last a lifetime. With this in mind, it is important to know when it is a good idea to remove your engagement ring and store it somewhere safe while you complete a task.
When completing your beauty routine
Moisturising can have a real impact on the brightness of your engagement ring, causing the metal to dullen over time, and this can happen whether you’re moisturising your hands, face or body. Make-up can also have a negative effect on your ring, as can spray beauty products such as hairspray and perfume. It is best to remove your ring before you get ready in the morning, and slide it back on once you’re ready to face the day.
When cleaning & washing the dishes
Household cleaning is your engagement ring’s worst nightmare. Not only does it involve dealing with all manner of different chemicals, it also involves potentially damaging movements such as buffing and scrubbing, and a higher risk of your ring catching on something too. If you really don’t want to remove your ring, wear thick cleaning gloves, but do bear in mind that your ring can still heat up and get caught on things despite the gloves.
When swimming
Swimming – be it in a swimming pool or in the ocean – is not a good experience for your engagement ring. The chlorine in the pool and the salt of the sea can have a mildly corrosive and discolouring effect on your ring. Not only that, but with the size of your finger fluctuating in the water, you are also at a much higher risk of losing your ring too. Do yourself and your ring a favour and remove it before entering any water.
When hitting the gym
If you’re doing it right, a session in the gym will make you sweat – especially your hands when you are using machines which have handles, such as the cross-trainer, the rowing machine and weight machines. Whether your ring is made from gold, silver or any other material, it is created from essentially soft metals which are prone to warping when put under extreme stress – and a workout in the gym certainly counts as that. If you do choose to wear your engagement ring at the gym, prepare yourself for scratches, cracks and even your stone coming loose due to a damaged setting.
When gardening
Gardening can involve lots of lifting, the use of tools and machinery, and dirty hands – all of which aren’t good for the health of your engagement ring. It is also surprisingly easy to lose your ring when gardening. Even when wearing gardening gloves, your ring can be placed under pressure and the risk of damage is high. Remove your ring before you head outside and remove the worry of loss or damage too.
