It is the month of February and love is in the air. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner — the most romantic day of the year — a wedding proposal could very well be on your mind.In a recent survey,it was revealed that41 per cent of married respondents aged 25-34 would have liked it if their partners had proposed to them on Valentine’s Day. Of course, that doesn’t include the people whose partners did actually pop the question on that day!
So, how do you successfully propose on Valentine’s Day? We have some top tips below on how to do it, and how to do it well.
Make it romantic
If you’ve chosen Valentine’s Day to put a diamond engagement ring on your beloved’s finger, then the chances are you are a romantic at heart. What better day of the year to go all-out on the romance than Valentine’s Day? Choose a proposal method that involves hearts, candles, rose petals, poems… anything loving and sentimental that you think your partner will appreciate. Having said that, a simple proposal can be just as romantic if that’s what you both would prefer.
Make it a memorable proposal
A proposal should always be memorable, but even more so on Valentine’s Day as you want it to stand out from the day itself. This doesn’t mean it has to be epic though — don’t feel you have to arrange an airplane with a trailing ‘Will you marry me?’ banner, or a flash mob in public! Make it memorable simply by making it unique to you and your future wife or husband.
Make sure it’s personalised
It’s easy to get carried away with the fact it’s Valentine’s Day and forget the fact it is a very special day for you and your partner — especially your partner, as they are unaware of what is happening. So, don’t give them a generic experience — instead, tailor your proposal to their personality. If you’ve decided to propose at your favourite restaurant, make sure it is your partner’s favourite, too. Make sure they feel extra special by going above and beyond.
Pop the question before they expect it
If you think your other half might have an inkling you’ll be proposing on Valentine’s Day, keep an element of surprise by popping the question when they least expect it — don’t wait until the end of the day, but instead propose over breakfast or while you’re out for a walk.
Don’t put the ring in their food
Hiding an engagement ring in food has become quite the cliché, and it is also rather undesirable — nobody wants to see a beautiful ring hiding in their meal, getting sticky! Keep the ring away from all food and drink, as not only is it messy but it’s also a choking hazard for the one you love if they don’t notice it in time!
Visit and then revisit the jeweller
Choose a selection of engagement rings for your partner at your local jewellers. If you live in Ipswich, Oxford, Reading or Windsor, drop in to a Robert Gatward Jewellers store and we’ll be delighted to help you make your selection. Then bring your beloved in to the store on Valentine’s Day to see the rings you have selected for them, and ask them to marry you! You can choose a ring together — how romantic! If this doesn’t sound like something your partner wold enjoy, buy the engagement ring in advance instead.
Don’t ‘forget’ it’s Valentine’s Day
In a bid to keep your proposal secret, you might think it’s a good idea to put your partner off the scent by pretending to forget that it is Valentine’s Day. This is not recommended, as the last thing you want on the day of your proposal is to fall out with your other half before you’ve popped the question!
